I am a huge fan of Neil Gaiman’s book Coraline and even a bigger fan when Laika made the story into a stop-motion animated film, directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas). The color palette, character and set design inspired me to put together a Coraline Inspired Wedding style shoot. I gathered my favorite vendor friends and we went to work.
There’s an adventure seeking little girl inside every bride. Our photo shoot aims to combine favorite elements from the Coraline story and movie to create a fantasy wedding, including a Victorian venue, vibrant tablescape, exotic floral decor, invitation/menu/place cards, custom cakes and desserts. [See my Behind the Scene blog post.]
In the story, Coraline and her family lived in a grand Victorian apartment called the Pink Palace. We selected the Pinney House, a fully restored historic Victorian hotel in Sierra Madre, as our styled shoot backdrop. The colors used in the decor include vibrant blue and purple palette with silver accent and red flowers. We chose to use dark red and orange tone for the florals including burgundy dahlias, ranunculus, sweetheart spray roses, seeded eucalyptus, red roses, hypercium berries (in blue), safari sunset, purple kallas in the centerpiece. The floral arrangement sits on top of a silver candelabra and surrounded by smaller blooms in silver julep cups. The cake was a three-tier fondant cake with ombré blue to purple sugar flowers dusted with gold, cascading sparingly from top to bottom which lends to a very whimsical and magical cake. We also had a naked chocolate ganache groom’s cake topped with fresh flowers. The invitation and inserts were enclosed in a silk wrapped box tied with purple ribbon and pinned with rhinestone brooch. Linens on the guest table were layers of blue and purple crinkled taffeta. We used the same fabric to tie on the back of silver Chiavari chairs. There are many many details such as button sugar cookies, vintage mini Singer sewing machine and sewing box, specialty flower petal table linens, button adorned place cards, and 3D printed skeleton key.
