You all know I love crafting every chance I get. I recently designed a beautiful casual garden wedding for a client and searched high and low for cost-effective decorative pillows with love quotes on them, but didn’t find any to my liking. Of course, I’m not the type that gives up easily, so I handmade a few pillows to complete the look. It’s a super easy, do-it-yourself pillowcase project, no-sew and no calligraphy skill needed. I bought the cushion inserts from Ikea, not as fluffy but did the trick. You can always get the fluffier inserts. Check out our other DIY Tutorials. Photos by Amy Haberland Photography
Material & Tools:
- Cushion/Pillow
- 1 Yard of Fabric (make 1 pillow)
- Fabric Scissors
- Iron & Ironing Board
- Tape Measure
- Iron-On Adhesive or Fabric Fuse Tape
- Nontoxic Fabric Markers
- Printed quote in your favorite font
Preparation:
If you’ve taken calligraphy classes or have amazing handwriting, you can skip this part. If you’re not so sure, go to Canva.com, a free online graphic/layout design app, to create some designs with pretty handwriting typeface, download and print it out, so you can trace it on the fabric.
Step 1:
You can use any size pillow/cushion. Measure the width of the cushion with tape measure.
Step 2:
Take the cushion measurement and add 1-2 inches to the width and length. The fabric should fold over and have at least 3-4 inches of overlap.
Step 3:
Cut the fabric to size leaving enough room for fusion tape or iron-on adhesive. Fold the fabric into thirds. See diagram below:
Step 4:
Insert the iron-on adhesive in between the flaps. Start with the bottom layer. Iron the section with adhesive. Do not open the flap while still hot.
Step 5:
Insert the iron-on adhesive in between the top layer and the bottom layer and iron. Repeat on the other side.
Step 6:
Flip the pillowcase inside out. Push the corners, straighten the fabric, and iron.
Step 7:
Insert the printed quote inside the pillowcase and trace the outline of the letters with a fabric marker. Wait for the ink to dry. If the writing is not dark enough, color over the letters again.
Step 8:
Insert the pillow/cushion into the pillowcase. Ta-da!
