Every year I say the same thing in January, “I can’t believe it’s the new year” and “I can’t believe my Maddies is X years old now”. It seems only yesterday when she was a toddler following me around. Time really flies! This year Maddie turned 7 and we threw a HUGE Project MC2 Spy Birthday Party for her at the park. We had 36 kids plus parents! It was way bigger than I expected, but everyone had a great time!
If you’re not familiar with Project MC2, it’s a Netflix show about teenage girl power spies, scientist, and technology gurus. The design, decor, and games of the party are inspired by the show. Check it out:
Spy Mission File Invitation:
I used Cricut to cut out the manila folder shape as the invitation card backing. The invitation was designed on Canva.com. Hand trimmed and affixed onto the backing. I added a paper clip on the upper left corner for the final touch. Here’s the invitation template & Cricut file silhouette cutout.
Special Party Character:
We hired a special party character to entertain the kids. Originally, I just asked for any girl scientist or nerdy girl with a fashion sense, but Princess Parties and Events performer went above and beyond. She actually watched a few episodes of the Project MC2 show and even learn the lingo and cheers the characters used. Maddie was definitely impressed.
Spy Kit Party Favors:
Can’t invite our guests and send them on spy missions without giving them the tools they need. I made these cardboard boxes with a custom label for each kid. If I had more time, I would’ve added a handle for each to make them look like spy briefcase. Here’s the spy kit label.
So, what’s in the spy kit and where I bought them? Here you go:
- Tuck Top Cardboard Box
- Clear Name Badge with Clip
- Kids Sunglasses
- Test Tube filled with Nerd Candy
- Invisible Marker with Black Light
- Mini Composition Book
Spy Training – Laser Obstacle Course:
Spy Training – Slime Making Station
The slime making station was a hit! Even some of the parents asked me if they could make one. Super simple with non-toxic ingredients and material. Each kid gets to make their own tub of slime in colors or add glitters. Lucky for me, I found these plastic test tubes at Dollar Tree Store, and it was perfect to hold the contact solution for sharing.
Ingredient & Material:
- Elmer’s Glue (It has to be Elmer’s)
- Contact Solution
- Baking Soda
- 16 oz. plastic container & lid
- Popsicle stick (for stirring)
- Food Coloring
- Glitters
Birthday Cake by Mwokaji Cakery:
Mwokaji Cakery saves the day! I had no idea what the cake should look like and waited until the last minute to finally contact my friend, Tamara of Mwokaji Cakery. She took some of my Pinterest ideas and make this cute cake for Maddie complete with fondant scientist instruments and Maddie’s name presented in Periodic Table style.
Dessert Table & Sweets:
Project MC2 Spy Purse Toy set makes great dessert table decor, topped with rainbow dyed roses and glittery baby’s breath arrangement give it a pop of color. Table runners from Target Valentine’s selection.
Is there any way to get an editable template of your invitation?
Hi Melissa, I may be able to whip up a template. Let me check the licensing rights on those cliparts first.
Hi Tina, I would like to get the template for the invitation and the kit labels! Thank you so much for sharing!
Hi Emily,
I just uploaded the invitation template and spy kit label. It’s a fill-able PDF but unfortunately, the formatting is a little bit off. If you have a photo editor such as Photoshop, you can add the text in it.
HI. this is so cute! thanks for sharing all of your templates. did you happen to have any for a birthday banner or for an ingredients list for the experients that you can share. thanks so much
Hi Nicole, the slime “experiment” is simple. You just need Elmer’s glue, contact solution, baking soda, food coloring, and glitter. Get the full recipe here: https://www.officedepot.com/fm/files/od/tiles/2017/make_slime/withelmersglue.pdf?cm_sp=office_supplies-_-makeslime_pdf-make-slime-recipe_-_-
